Welcome

My name is Rachel Li and I am a 3rd year Therapeutic Recreation student at Seneca College in Toronto, Ontario.

Before starting this path in recreation therapy, I had received a diploma in Early Childhood Education at George Brown College. During high school, like many students, you're left wondering what career path you should embark on in post-secondary. I had a real interest in working with children, especially after having some experience volunteering at a summer day camps.

After receiving my diploma in Early Childhood Education, I realized that although I do enjoy working with children, I did not want to work in that type of setting. I took a year off to figure out what direction I wanted to go in. Looking into colleges, I happen to come across the Therapeutic Recreation program at Seneca College. Before coming across this program, I have never heard about recreation therapy. What piqued my interest in this program was that you could use every day activities as therapy. Also, the program offered placements so that you would obtain experience further grabbed my interest.

I've completed two placements in the hospital setting with older adults. Having said that, my interest has shifted from working with children to working with older adults. Prior to these placements, I would have never thought of working with older adults. However, after having the experience to work with older adults, I really do enjoy working with this population.
